Our highly-skilled staff have a depth of knowledge when it comes to UV water treatment, and they will build and deliver a professional UV water treatment system that will supply you with the high-purity water you need.

The Basics of UV Water Treatment

UV water treatment has a wide array of commercial applications, whether it’s for drinking water, beverage filtration or cleanliness in a laboratory setting. Ultraviolet treatment has been used in purifying some fresh juices, like apple cider, to comply with Food and Drug Administration standards.

In the lab, washing essential tools and equipment, such as safety goggles or pipettes with UV-treated water has been effective in the disinfecting process between uses.

Ultraviolet water purification has also seen some use in aquariums and ponds as a means to help control living organisms and harmful pathogens, thus increasing water clarity and preventing the spread of disease in aquariums.

Ultraviolet water purification or Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) works by using short-length UV waves to kill or inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms. The water flows past UV lamps, which target the living microorganisms that can be found in the water that may not be removed through other types of water treatment.

UV water treatment removes microorganisms such as:

  • Salmonella Typhosa (Typhoid fever)
  • Bacteriophage (E. coli)
  • Hepatitis
  • Chlorella
  • Influenza
  • Legionella Pneumophilia (Legionnaires’ Disease)

UV water treatment is accomplished without adding harmful chemicals to the water, doesn’t distort the water quality or effect its pH balance. When used, UV water treatment can have a 99.99% effective rate on microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, mold and algae.

UV water purification can be used on surface water or well water and is more cost and labor efficient in comparison to a number of other filtration methods. Simply put, the systems are cheaper and easier to use. A UV system is also environmentally-friendly and reduces the risk of disease from the microorganisms.

UV Water Treatment Applications

Ultraviolet systems are best used on water that has already gone through a reverse osmosis water treatment, as larger suspended particles in the water may block the radiation, but UV water systems can often be coupled with a pre-treatment system to eliminate those larger particles.

UV water treatment can be used across many industries, including:

  • Food and Beverage
  • Healthcare
  • Agriculture
  • Restaurants
  • Schools
  • Hospitality

…and more. Any industry that demands high-quality pure water can benefit from a UV water treatment system.

Besco Commercial can provide you with the system you need, from low flows up to hundreds of gallons per minute.

Client: St. Julian’s Winery - Paw Paw, Michigan

Client Challenge: St. Julian’s Winery, a renowned establishment in Paw Paw, Michigan, reached out to us following a referral in the spring. Their primary concern was the outdated water treatment equipment they had in place. They were grappling with an old mechanical timer Iron Filter that was not only leaking but also had fouled filter media. Additionally, their carbon filter, which was responsible for chlorine removal, was in a similar state of disrepair. As a winery and distillery, the quality and purity of their water are paramount, and these issues were hindering their operations. Besco Solution: Recognizing the importance of water in the winemaking and distilling process, we took a holistic approach to address St. Julian’s Winery's concerns. We began by replacing their old equipment with state-of-the-art solutions. This included the installation of a new 30”x72” Clack 2” Iron Filter and a 30”x72” Clack 2” Carbon Filter. But our engagement didn't stop there. We also took over the maintenance of their DI Exchange Tanks for their lab, ensuring that they always have access to high-quality water for their testing and quality control processes. The partnership between St. Julian’s Winery and Besco Water has been mutually beneficial. We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to assist such a prestigious establishment in optimizing their water treatment processes. Feedback from St. Julian’s Winery has been overwhelmingly positive, and they are delighted with the improvements and the quality of service provided by Besco Water.
