Types of Laboratory Water
Understanding the different grades of water is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your research. To reach these specific purity levels, Besco designs custom laboratory water treatment systems that utilize a combination of filtration, deionization, and reverse osmosis tailored to your facility’s requirements.
Feed Water
Also referred to as raw or potable water, feed water quality reflects its local source. Because it contains minerals and organic compounds, it is rarely used directly in research. Instead, it serves as the intake for a comprehensive lab water filtration system that prepares the water for higher-tier purification.
Primary Grade Water (Type 3)
When feed water is processed through carbon laboratory water filtration and a high-performance lab RO water system, it becomes Type 3 water. This grade is the standard starting point for many general lab functions and serves as a vital pretreatment for ultrapure systems.
This type of water is Ideal for autoclave feed, hydroponics, and general laboratory-grade washing. Our laboratory water filtration systems are engineered to handle high volumes while protecting downstream components from fouling.
General Laboratory Grade Water (Type 2)
Type 2 water serves as the high-volume “workhorse” for your facility. While it lacks the ultra-low organic carbon levels of Type 1, its high resistivity makes it the ideal choice for general procedures where ultrapure benchmarks are not required.
Type 2 water is the primary choice for spectrophotometry, reagent preparation, and the production of microbiological buffers and media.
This grade is typically delivered via a high-capacity lab deionized water system (or in other words, a DI water system for lab use). These laboratory water treatment systems often utilize large exchange tanks to provide a consistent, bulk supply for the entire facility.
Ultrapure Water (Type 1)
When your research demands absolute ionic and organic purity, a Type 1 laboratory water purification system is a strict requirement. Unlike the bulk volumes of Type 2, Type 1 water is typically produced “on-demand” at the point of use. This is because ultrapure water is so “hungry” for ions that it will actually leach minerals out of the air or storage containers if left to sit.
Type 1 water is mandatory for critical, high-sensitivity tasks such as cell and tissue cultures, genomics (PCR), and ultra-trace analytical techniques like Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
To achieve the theoretical maximum resistivity, a specialized laboratory deionized water system performs final “polishing” using UV photo-oxidation to destroy trace organics and ultrafiltration to eliminate endotoxins and nucleases.
When you choose Besco Commercial for your ultrapure water system, you are guaranteed water that is completely free of particulates that could interfere with sensitive chemical reactions or clog expensive analytical columns.
Distilled Water Systems
For laboratories that prioritize biological sterility and the removal of non-volatile organic contaminants, a distilled water system for laboratory use remains an essential solution. Unlike ion-exchange processes that focus on mineral removal, distillation involves boiling feed water and condensing the steam into a sterile container. This thermal cycle ensures the destruction of bacteria and viruses, making distilled water ideal for sensitive microbiological applications and as a highly stable source for Type 2 general-grade water.
Our Laboratory Water Purification Services
Professional Water Analysis and Feed Water Testing
Since the quality of raw “feed water” varies significantly depending on your geography, every Besco project begins with a water analysis. Our experts test your source water for total dissolved solids (TDS) and organic loads to engineer a lab water filtration system specifically designed for your local chemistry. This proactive approach ensures your high-purity RO membranes and DI resins are protected from premature exhaustion.
Custom Systems for Every Laboratory Water Type
We design and implement laboratory water purification systems that provide Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 water (or a tiered combination of all three within a single facility). Depending on your specific research requirements, we integrate lab RO water systems for primary grade water or advanced laboratory deionized water systems for ultrapure applications. This ensures that whether you are rinsing glassware or performing high-sensitivity HPLC, your facility consistently hits the required technical benchmarks.
Scalable Solutions and Flexible System Sizing
Whether your laboratory produces 1 liter or 1,000 liters per day, our laboratory water treatment systems are built to scale perfectly with your operational footprint. These systems are engineered to be modular, meaning you can expand your capacity or add additional purification stages as your research goals evolve. This flexibility ensures you never have to replace an entire system just to increase your purity levels or daily volume.
24/7 Emergency Support and Proactive Maintenance
Critical research operates on strict timelines, so we provide 24/7 emergency services to prevent the loss of months of sensitive data. We maintain a deep inventory of replacement parts and high-purity resin cartridges to keep your DI water system for lab use online at all times. Beyond emergency repairs, our scheduled maintenance and resin exchange programs ensure your system consistently maintains its theoretical maximum resistivity.
Flexible DI Water Delivery
Our DI water delivery model is designed to scale with your specific volume requirements. Whether you need a one-time order for a specialized project or a recurring schedule to support daily operations, we provide a consistent supply of water with ultra-low TDS levels and high resistivity standards. This is an ideal solution for facilities that have fluctuating water demands or those that prefer to avoid the maintenance responsibilities of a permanent deionized water system for a laboratory.
Beyond the Laboratory: Scaling Your Water Quality
At Besco Commercial, we recognize that laboratory research is often the first step toward large-scale production. Our team is uniquely equipped to help your facility transition from benchtop laboratory water purification to industrial-grade manufacturing.
For example, we provide specialized Life Sciences water treatment services for biotech and research firms that require consistent, high-purity water for sensitive biological assays and genomic research.
