If you run an Electrical Discharge Machining, or EDM, wire-cutting facility, it is imperative that you use the correct dielectric fluid recommended by the manufacturer. Many manufacturers require ultrapure water for creating these 3-D parts, which are cut under water with high precision.
Besco Commercial Water Treatment can help your facility design a deionized water supply line for your EDM machine.
What is EDM?
Electrical Discharge Machining wire cutting uses electricity to cut hardened metal, such as steel, titanium and other metals. The part, or workpiece, is shaped using a thin metal wire (usually made of brass). The wire does not touch the workpiece it is cutting. Instead, the fluid between the energized wire and the metal it’s cutting causes the metal to melt away. The fluid acts as an insulator and a conductor. It also flushes away the debris.
EDM wire cutting allows for intricate patterns and tight tolerances that are not possible with conventional machining.
Why Is DI Water Necessary?
Any impurities in the dielectric fluid will affect the finished product, the cutting tool or the EDM wire-cutting machine itself.
Deionized water is preferred as the dielectric fluid because water has to have one megohm or less of resistivity for this application. Water with higher total dissolved solids could cause a spark.
Tap water can lead to short circuits, and the presence of ions in the water can lead to oxidation.
