What is EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining)?
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) wire cutting uses controlled electrical sparks to cut through hardened metals such as steel, titanium, and other conductive materials. The workpiece is shaped using a thin metal wire, usually made of brass, that never physically touches the surface it cuts.
Instead, the process takes place under a bath of deionized (DI) water, which serves several critical functions. The DI water acts as a dielectric fluid, insulating the wire and workpiece until a spark is precisely discharged. Each spark melts a microscopic portion of metal, and the DI water immediately cools the cutting area and flushes away debris.
EDM wire cutting allows for intricate patterns, extremely tight tolerances, and clean edges that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with conventional machining methods.
Why Is DI Water Necessary?
Any impurities in the dielectric fluid can affect the accuracy of the finished part, damage the wire, or shorten the life of your EDM machine.
