Water Usage Tips for Small Businesses

The availability of purified water for drinking, cleaning, hygiene and other common workplace uses is essential to maintaining company standards, where every opportunity for efficiency must be seized and every edge counts. Small businesses, whether they use water for the product or service they provide, need as many ways to efficiently use and conserve water as possible. Since we have more than 50 years of experience in commercial water treatment, we know how to best serve the water purification needs of small businesses. Here are some tips for how small businesses can best maintain and regulate water usage.

Conserve Water

For businesses that own the property on which they operate or those in areas where water is scarce, like the recently drought-stricken area of Southern California, conserving water is very important. We recommend finding creative ways to make sure that you and your employees use water wisely and do not waste it. Teach your employees about efficient water use practices as they can reach a long way toward keeping your water usage in check. For example:

  • Turn off the tap while you lather your hands with soap in the bathroom.
  • If you’re business has a dishwasher, don’t run it until it is full.
  • If you hand wash dishes, fill the sink up with water and pre-soak, instead of letting the tap run while you scrub. Purchase disposable/recyclable dishes and flatware if the budget permits.
  • Report any leaks immediately.

Use The Right Equipment

Using the right equipment and techniques around your small business can also help increase the efficiency of water use and the quality of your water. Some of the things you can do are:

  • Make sure your appliances are up to standard and are water-efficient. Did you know that most modern Energy-Star dishwashers use less water than washing a full load of dishes by hand?
  • If possible, treat your business landscape with xeriscape landscaping that incorporates water-wise ground cover, succulents, and other plants that thrive with little water.
  • Use water-efficient bathroom fixtures such as taps with an aerator or flow restrictor to use less water or water-efficient urinals.
  • Install water softeners, reverse osmosis systems and water purification filters to help get the most out of your businesses’ taps.
  • We’ve seen some small businesses start a workplace bottle fund. Each employee chips in to make sure that there is always a supply of bottled water available for all employees while at work. This can help cut down on the tap usage at your business and it’s great for those who prefer bottled water anyway. At some supermarkets, you can buy a case of bottled water for as little as $2.99.
